This probably sounds familiarto most people even if they never had Latin. In foreign language classes the emphasis was on good grammar and pronunciation. First year French, Spanish,and German taught the student basic sentence structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Advanced studiesdelved into more technical points on grammar andliterature of the countries. Although Latin is not amodern spoken language, it is no less important. Foursuccessive years of the language were offered rangingfrom practice in reading and writing simple Latin tothe study of Virgils Aeneid in the fourth year. Allforeign language courses gave the student knowledgeof the people and cultures of the nation where thelanguage originated.Mrs. Reavis displays her model of the Roman Colosseum to one of her Latinclasses31
