Description: ■■ORCHESTRAAlmost one hundred eighty-five students are members of the orchestra, the band, or the junior band and orchestra. Appearing at convocations, at receptions for the Parent-Teacher Association, in special eveningprograms, and at Baccalaureate exercises, the orchestra has played different types of compositions, including the works of famous musicians, withunusual skill. At the Senior Plays, also, a part of the orchestra entertained the audience between acts. This organization, under Mr. Longsdirection, has exercised a cultural influence over the student body and thecommunity. Always enjoyable, the music of the orchestra has become indispensable to some of our high school programs.BANDMany times during the past year we have been thrilled by the livelymarches played by the Bloomington High School Band. Their inspiringmusic at football and basketball games has fortified our teams with newspirit for the fray. We remember them for their colorful parades onArmistice Day and on Boy Scout Day—and on the Monday after the Sectional Tournament, when we celebrated our great victory! At Thanksgiving Bloomington was host for the State Clinic of Music,in which our band had a prominent part. In March the band and orchestra participated in the state solo ensemble contest at Indiana University. The state contest was held in Terre Haute this May.Steadily increasing in musical skill under the able leadership of Mr.Long, the organization has developed into one of the best high school bandsin the state.GLEE CLUBThe chief aims of the Glee Club are to discover and encourage talentand to give opportunities for public performance at school and city functions. At Christmas time they sang carols in the halls at school, and thenvisited the hospital and various homes in the city for further carols. Theyalso appeared at convocations, at Parent-Teacher Association meetings, and at Baccalaureate exercises. Characteristic of their singing is a softharmony of voices that is very pleasing to hear. Climaxing the activitiesof the year, the Glee Club, directed by Miss Schwend, presented a concertin the spring. This year the members were saddened by the death of a former soloist in the Glee Club, Eithel Galloway, at whose funeral they sang.Page sixty-three
