THE NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC HONORSOCIETYHighlighted by an annual banquet, a state convention, and outsidespeakers, The National Scientific Honor Society was organized to encourage a more scientific attitude both in group and individual work.Members are selected from applicants who have a B or better inscience and citizenship and who are outstanding for their courage, service,character, scientific scholarship, and leadership.Both junior and senior high school students are eligible. Each semester new members attend both a rough and formal ceremony. Thebanquet is served at the formal.Talks by members and outside speakers are featured at the regularmeetings. The main yearly meeting is a state convention, in conjunctionwith the Indiana Academy of Science, the sponsoring body. At this convention, members compete in exhibits with similar organizations over thestate.CAMERA CLUBDisciples of the lens and shutter organized the Camera Club this yearto encourage and foster the art of photography among students.The first club of its type in the high school, the camera club is sponsored by Mr. Conn of the Chemistry Department.During the year, members have visited the Wiles Drug Store to studyenlarging of films, have made visits to the university, and have had outside speakers.Their major objective this year is to build a dark room where members can print and develop their pictures.When the weather permitted, the club took numerous hikes, on whichthey took their cameras.Officers are: president, Robert Everhart; vice-president, KennethSkirvin; secretary-treasurer, Robert Letsinger.THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICAOrganized in 1932 for students interested in agriculture, The FutureFarmers of America have been an active boys organization ever since.The Bloomington chapter, sponsored by J. 0. James, carries on vocational projects, has an athletic team, goes on numerous tours, and holds asecondhand book sale, besides carrying on various farm demonstrationsduring the semester.The organizations aim is to develop agricultural leadership; its purpose has been to create more interest in farming as an occupation and incountry life in general. It was created to improve the surroundings ofthe home and the community, to encourage cooperative effort among students, and to advance the course of vocational education in agriculture.Page sixty |
