ATHLETICSSMITHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS 1938-’39When the one great scorer comes to write against yourname, he writes not that you lost or won, but how you playedthe game.Believing that there comes to every normal boy from, fourteen to twenty years of age a desire for competition inphysical skill and power in games of the Athletic nature andthat high school athletics should represent the capstone ofmuch of the basic work carried on in the physical educationdepartment, an attempt will be made to summarize our effortsin athletics for this school year (1938-^9)*In order to compete in softball at the beginning ofthe year it was necessary to replace three infielders, acomplete pitching staff, and fill in the outfield positionswith boys who were making their first appearances inathletics at Smithville. There was a great deal of interestshown in this fall sport by both high school and Junior highschool boys as was indicated by the participation ofapproximately fifty would be athletes. In the fall seasonthe high school teams was able to win one of three gameswhile the junior high was rolling up a victory string fourgames long. When tho warm spring weather comes around, therival schools should find it rather tough going to out scoreeither of these teams in games to be played during theclosing weeks of school. When the first call for basket-ball was given thirtyfive candidates reported for practice. Among which five ofthem wore letter men from last years team but only one hadsoon service as a regular. Buy putting into practice thethings which had been learned in spring practice and the fewweeks previous to the opening of the current season, thefirst seven opponents to face the newly organized quintet, were defeated and it appeared that a sectional dark horsemay have boon in the making. This flying start suddenlymade a reversal of form, however, and at tho time thisarticle was written a slump in performance registered alosing streak five games long, at that time it was theambition of the Coach, the school officials, friends of theschool, and tho friends of the team to got back into winningform before entering the Tri-County Tournament atStinesville. |
