Along with the actual study ofgrammar and composition, the teachers try to bring to theirclasses pictures of the life, customs, and habits of the peoplewhose language is being studied. The work of this departmenthas always been an important part of the curriculum. Latin wasthe first foreign language offered. French and German werefirst taught in 1903. German was discontinued during theWorld War, but was again offered in 1927. Four years aregiven in each subject. Until this year two years of a languagehad to be taken before credit was given. Now a student mayreceive credit for two semesters work. In this department onegains a valuable view of the languages and the customs of a fewof the countries of Europe.
