Description: stand when she came for the tea. You know which doors to use, dont you? They all replied that they did, not even knowing what she had asked.Get off the stage, the curtains are going up. Remember to speak slowly andclearly. Katy and Anne barely succeeded in vanishing as the curtain rose. The play began. The voices shook and trembled. There were suggestionsof hysteria. Mercifully, Florence was supposed to be in a nervous state, a conditionwhich previously had been hard to assume, but which at the time came very natural. The difficult scene, which had been rehearsed before the performance, came.Mary sat on the wrong side of the stage; Florence in a chair with Dick beside her.Bob, the correct one, felt lost. Low-toned directions came. The positions werechanged. What do I say? whispered Florence. She was prompted. The teawas brought in. The speeches came faster and faster. Bob asked to relieve Maryof her cup before she had tasted the contents. Again the speeches were forgotten.Bob crossed the stage and motioned to Florence to follow. From then on the playprogressed without further blunders.Their spirits sank with the drop of the curtain. What a dismal failure! theycried. All rushed to the dressing room, trying to free their glistening faces fromthe makeup.I cant get all this stuff off, can you? choked Florence. It hurts my eyesto rub them this way. I feel like crying, anyway; wasnt it terrible? It was just awful, replied Anne.People, that was just splendid! the teacher called. What was splendid? they chorused. Why, your play, of course!I dont see where you get that, said Katy.It was, though. You did just beautifully, Anne. You were fine! said MissSpart warmly.Wasnt she, though? said Bob.You all were, said the coach.Bob certainly saved the day for me, Florence chimed in.It was grand! came from the electrician. We made over twenty dollars. I think that was pretty good, remarked themanager, who had sold the tickets.Better than our wildest dreams! Im ready to go home now, said Katy.I am going to take as much home tonight as I can. Just think, people, I cantget over it. The play is played!
