The Bloomingtonteam was without the services of CaptainKrueger, but went into the game to fightand was but four points in the rear atthe final gun, 28 to 32. It called to theminds of the older fans that memorablegame between the same two teams on theI. U. floor in 1919, when Clifford Wellsultimate State Champs came out on top,25 to 24.While Benny was still out of thegame and Bobby Correll with him, Vin-cennes gave the boys their seventh consecutive set-back at the Old Post by a48 to 20 score. In this game NobeStull made his debut in a Purple jersey,having become eligible at noon of thatday. On the back road the squad stoppedover-night at Sandborn and broke theirlosing streak, 33 to 18.Krueger was not yet in playingcondition when Bedford took their firstperfect season from Bloomington by counting 38 points to the home teams18. However, the Wakefield quintet was primed for a victory and soakedthe Franklin basket slingers for a 51 to 14 row. The next week they had areal tussle with Manual, but came out on top, 35 to 31.The last reverse of the season came with the Alicetowns second winin the last ten minutes of a hard game, 42 to 27. In the last home game,Marks fighting cohort evened up with Frankfort, 30 to 23, and in the seasons windup at Columbus gave Coach Bill Dobbins Bulldogs a 32 to 33handout.The Sectional TournamentBloomington kept up its traditional victory by winning its district withmore ease than it has met with for several seasons. The first to fall beforethem was Patricksburg, by a 50 to 2 final score. The losers were unableto score from the field. The plucky Spencer dark horse was the next tosuccumb to the Purple onslaught in the first semi-finals match, with a 36to 9 count against them. In the finals against Smithville the home teamwas everywhere superior, and outclassed their smaller opponents, 32 to 12.The Regional TournamentThe Bloomington-Bedford regional was a heartbreaker for the Purplefans, who never lessened their cheering, even though defeat was evident inthe closing minutes. For the first time in the historv of the I. H. S. A. ABloomington has not gone to the State Tournament.The first half was about even, 8 to 12, favoring the winners. In thehome stretch the Markmen hit all kinds of tough luck and lost to a goodteam, 21 to 13. After the gun was fired and in the midst of the crowdingthrong, Bobby Correll pitched the final points from the foul line. CaptainBenny Krueger played a wonderful game for the Purple and White, andmade a fitting close to his last game in a high school suit.Page fifty-six
