THE 1COACH MARK WAKEFIELDTHE REVIEW OF THE SEASON<—>It was with a none too cheerful outlook that Coach Wakefield entered uponthe second year of his duties at Bloomington High School.Captain Krueger was the only man assured of a regular position, with Wellsand Hill practically assured, but Wellsgraduated at mid-term and left a big holein the Wakefield machine. The secondteam produced Correll, Albertson andGeiger, while Farmer, Xeal, Moser, Tur-pin and Hall were the products of thetryouts. The stock of the team wasboosted above par by the matriculationof Noble Stull, the former Smithvilleflash, and after becoming eligible in January, he played a game second only tothat of the Mighty Benny. To pry off the lid, the Markmen had a real job on their hands to downOolitic by a two point margin, 24 to 26. However, they got rid of the buckand came into their own by scrapping the Sandborn and Orleans machines by27 and 39 points respectively; 40 to 13 and 46 to 7. The first real game of theseason was at Greencastle, where the Purple handed the veteran Rheamen a26 to 24 bruiser.Krueger and Company made it five straight by crowning the Artesian Citybasketeers 39 to 15. This looked like anything but an old time Bloomington-Martinsville fray. The team concluded its perfect record by invading the 22State Champs stronghold and grabbing off a sizzling 23 to 19 victory. Although Krueger sat in the rooters section during the first half with an injured chest, he entered the melee in the last ten minutes and won the old ballgame with three field goals. However, the good ship Purple and White went on the rocks for sevenstraight, beginning with the disastrous Bedford defeat by a 21 to 25 tally. But all of the games were with the cream of the states best teams, five of thembeing away from home, and only one of these was by more than seven points.Anderson was the first of these and won out only after the hardest kindof a scrap 23 to 28. The following week end the team hit a two-game tripand lost to Frankfort in the closing minutes, 22 to 29, and the next night toJefferson, of Lafayette, 26 to 28, after a five minute overtime period. Of thisgame Coach Grosshans of Jeff said, I never saw a cleaner team than Bloomington play. There was not a personal on Markmen. In the return game the Purple was a victim of the Curtismen, 31 to 37,and a week later lost a second time to Coach Staggs wonderful aggregationPage fifty-five |
