Bloomington High School, The Gothic, 1916, Page 48

Description: 19 GOTHIC 16INTER CLASSDEBATINGInterclass DebatingEARLY last October a chapel was held as an attempt to stir upthe schools interest in debating. Speeches were made by Prof.Williams and by the members of last years debating team. Afterforty minutes of rapid-fire oratory, almost one hundred studentssignified their willingness to take part in debating during the 1915-16 season. These one hundred students were divided into teams ofthree each, and a series of debates were held. After each debatethe three best speakers were chosen as another team. Finally, bythis elimination process, a debating team was selected for each class.Although the teams received no coaching except from the mem-bers of the Dialectic or Girls Debating Club, a number of findswere made and developed into good speakers. This years experi-ence has shown that there is plenty of material and interest in de-bating, and that the only real drawback is the lack of a teacher totake charge of the work. It is hoped that next year arrangementswill be made for an instructor to have complete supervision and con-trol of debating and public speaking.(48)Image alt-text: Black ink drawing of an individual wearing a suit, gesturing while talking.
