Boys are generally able to take care of themselves.C.--O yes, certainly!T.--What about you girls? Going to be old maid school marms?B.--Yes, its likely, Ted Johnston.C.--We havent decided yet. Here comes Paul.Enter Paul.B.--Hello Paul. What are you going to be?P.--What are you talking about?B.--Mr. Ramsey is trying to reveal the future. What about it?P.--O, Ill be some unknown backwoodsman, I expect.R.--I wish you all joy and success, whatever you undertake.Meanwhile I want to say that we are sorry to see you go.T.--Were all mighty sorry to leave. We want to thank you forthe class of 1913 for what you have done to help us along and startus right.R.--Thank you, Ed. Ill miss my supper if I dont go now. (Exeunt).SCENE II.In the Presidents office at White House, ten years later. Cleon,President of the U. S. Bertha with her.B.--Well, Snapper, you certainly are to be congratulated forwinning in the last election. Just to think! You are the first womanPresident.C.--It does sound pretty good. Mrs. Ramsey brought about thesuccess.B.--She certainly has worked hard for the cause.Enter messenger with card.C. reads--Mrs. Earl E. Ramsey. Admit her at once.(Exit Mess.) Enter Mrs. Ramsey.C.--I am so glad to see you, Mrs. Ramsey. I want to thankyou for our success.B.--Yes, if it hadnt been for our suffrage leader, we couldnthave won.Mrs. R.--Im glad we did win.B.--Hows Mr. Ramsey?Mrs. R.--All right. Hes teaching school still.B.--Poor man!Mrs. R.--He doesnt need any pity. He has a very easy job of it.C.--Theres just one person were going to have trouble with,Mrs. Ramsey.B.--Thats Paul Gaskins. Hes Speaker of the House and hecan just wind those people around his finger.Mrs. R.--He has certainly become powerful. But well settlehim yet.C.--Men are always such a nuisance.B.--I wonder what Ted and Frank are doing now?C.--I would like to see them. Since they are in the city, I expectthey will call.Enter messenger with card.C.--Edward Johnston and F. B. Lindsay. What about YOUR success?T -- The ENQUIRER did fairly well until the last campaign. Iam now editor--in--chief of the Smithville News.C.--Ah, I see. You are against suffrage?T.--Er--yes.B.--What about those educational reforms, Mr. Lindsay?F.--Ahem--a--I am sorry to announce to your Honor--ahem--thatit failed. I am now teacher at the district school at Beanblossom.Enter messenger. Cleon reads a card.C.--Hon. Paul Gaskins! I must see him at once.Enter Paul.P.--Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Ah, what a pleasure!C.--Wont you be seated, Mr. Gaskins? Is there some matter of--P.--I merely called to tell you of a certain bill passed by aunanimous vote of Congress.C.--Goodness! What is it? To think I havent heard about it.P.--Since the office of President is such an honor Congress passedthis bill providing that your only salary be the glory of this position.C.--What! You dont mean that? Its impossible! Its outrageous!P.--Its a fact, nevertheless. I thought you would be interested.I wish you success with this honorable position. Good afternoon (Exit).C--Its positively mean. How do you suppose Im going to liveon honor? And Ed gave up his position in Chicago too, when Ibecame President. I wont stand for such insults!
