Description: Bob Pops the QuestionPearle SmithScene--College Campus.Time--Late in afternoon of last day of school.Characters--Robert Osbourne, Dick, Max, the Trio, all studentsof the college. Professor Crowsby. Dorothy Day, Jean, girl students.SCENE IMost secluded part of campus, covered with trees and bushes. EnterDorothy Day and Robert Osbourne.Dorothy--Just think, its all over. I wonder what the next fouryears will be?Robert--Come, lets sit down by this tree. Im dead tired. Say,Dot, can you realize that this is our last year at college? It doesntseem possible. Gee! but they have been good old years--er--sincethe first term.Dor.--Didnt you really enjoy that term, Bob?Rob.--Enjoy it? And you in that old boarding school! That wasthe silliest thing your father ever did, Dot, to send you to boardingschool, because I was coming here, and you wanted to.Dor.--I guess he found that out. Honest, Bob, I never will forgethow scared I was when I ran away and went home. Dad didnt saya word until I told him I was coming here. Then there was an awfulscene.Rob.--Why doesnt he like me, Dot? I never could understand.Dor.--Ive told you a dozen times it isnt you he objects to. ItsJust--oh, well, you know we got to be such good friends in our fresh-man high school year, and he didnt approve of my being with you somuch. I think its just habit with him now.Rob. (with a far away look)--Didnt we have grand times in highschool? Remember that day you entered school? Gee, but I wasproud to tell the fellows you lived across the street from me. Why, I--(Enter Dick.)Dick--Hi, there! What you two stickin round here for? Why dontyou go over to Ransons? Theyre having open house over there.Better come on over.Rob.--Naw, run on. What do you want to get in a bunch like thatfor?Dick (winking at Dot)--Oh well, maybe it will be crowded. GuessIll just sit down. Wont get to see you two much longer. (Sits down.)Rob. (sitting up in earnestness)--Oh, say, I dont think there willbe many over there. You had better go on over. Theyll wonderwhere you are. You wont get to see em again.Dick (rising)--Oh, well, if you put it that way, guess Id better begoing. So long. (Exit Dick.)Rob--Dot, do you remember the first party I took you to?Dor.--Why, of course I do. It was at Ruths.Rob.--And our senior year. Why, we were together every day.Dor.-And one night you went-out with the boys and didnt comeover.Rob.--And the next night your let Ralph come over and I was in-sanely jealous. You wouldnt do that now, would you Dor-- Oh,heavens, look coming! (Enter the Trio, leaning on each other andsinging.) Maybe theyll pass us and not see us. Be still. (Trio comesto middle of the stage. See the two and quit singing.)First Boy--Well, look whos here. Hello there, Dorothy. Try-ing to reconcile old Ossy to the parting?Second Boy--Say, Bob, you look like youd lost your last friend.Cheer up, nobodys going to run away with Dot. (Dot looks embar-rassed.)Third Student--Lets sing one of our little songs and cheer themup. Havent heard our latest hit, have you? Its just the thing forsentimental--Rob.--Say, you fellows make me sick. Run on with your songs.Who wants to listen to a pack of lions roaring, like you do.First Student--Say, guess we had better be going--shame youpeople cant appreciate good music. Come on, fellows. (Exit two ofthe trio. Enter Professor.)Third Student--Here comes Professor Crowsby. How do you do,Prof. Mr. Osbourne, here, was just asking about you. (Growl fromBob.) He wants to know if you are going abroad again this summer.Prof.--Oh--How do you do, Miss Day. Ah, Mr. Osbourne, it isvery kind of you to ask about me. In fact, I do not--er--know justwhat I shall--er--do. You see, I would--er--love to--er--travel againthis year, but-ah-I am afraid my work will--er--not permit me.Dor.--Indeed? (Dor. and Rob. look very bored.)Prof.--Ah, yes. You see, they wish me to remain here, for thesummer, and I--er--feel it my duty to remain. You see we professorsdo not do just as we wish. We must think of the students, and if Ishould not stay during the summer, it would no doubt be hard for-Rob.--Pardon, Professor, but arent you missing a meeting? Isaw that all the Faculty were to meet at the office at four thirty, andits thirty-five after now.Prof.--Oh, indeed--I hadnt heard of the meeting. I must--er--begoing. I--er--hope you will,--oh,--pardon my hasty leave taking.(Exit Professor.)Dor.--Bob, how could you?Rob.--Well, I had to get rid of him some way. Say, Dot, I didntbring you out here to talk at all the professors and students in college.Page Forty-five
