Dresser, long mirror.Pennants on wall, etc.Ruby and Lavona giving last touches to their toilet. Ruby ar-ranging her hair before the dresser, Lavona before the long mirror.Ruby: Lavona, how does my hair look, anyway? I do wish Icould fix my hair as nice as you do yours.Lavona: Yes; mine looks so nice! I did want it to look decenttoday and it looks the worst ever.Ruby: Well, I am glad it is a pretty day for the ball game. Iguess it wont make very much difference how my hair looks.Say, Henry, Cookie is going to play shortstop. Oh! I am just wildabout his playing. Why, I never saw anyone so lively in all my life.He can grab a ball and get it to the right place in the shortest timeof anyone I know. I think he is awfully good looking, too. He hasthe best looking eyes. Oh! I am just crazy about Cookie.Lavona: Yes, I believe you are. Say, Rube, Sam is going to playtoo.Ruby: Sam who?Lavona: Sam who? Sam Hutton, of course. You didnt eventhink of any other Sam; now did you, Rube?Ruby: Well, how was I to know who you meant? You didnt say.Lavona: But you did, all right.Ruby: Oh, our case is all off now. Why he hasnt been to see me-that is-I mean-I havent had a date-for almost two months. Hedid send me some flowers that time I was out of school for three days,but that didnt mean anything special. Say. Henry, whose place is itwhen a couple is emerging from a high school case, to pay the install-ments on a ring?Lavona: Why, the fellows, of course. You shouldnt let that wor-ry you.Ruby: Oh, I dont.Lavona: Does Ainslie know about it?Ruby: Know about it! I should say he doesnt! Why I wouldnot have him know for the world. He musnt know. Oh! Lavona,dont vou dare go and tell Shirley. He would go straight and tell him.Lavona: You silly little Rube! I am not going to tell. I donttell everything I know. Wait-listen-didnt you hear some one whis-tle? Oh! thats our whistle. There they are now. Where is yourhat? Hurry. Maybe they have been waiting for a long time. Listenat Ainslie laugh. Come on. If you dont hurry, Cookie will have topull off some of his stunts before you get there.Ruby (giving last touch to her hair: Well, Im ready. I wouldntmiss anything for the world. Does the powder show? There is a littleon your right cheek. Say now, Lavona, you keep mum on the Samquestion this afternoon.Scene II.Scene on High School campus. A baseball game between SalemHigh School and Bloomington High School. Ruby and Ainslie, Lavonaand Shirley, have seats on the north-west side of Beck field.Time: Fifth inning of the game.Shirley: Coleman knocked a good one that time. He is playingunusually well today. I think he would do better all the time if hedidnt talk so much.Ainslie: Fred Stuart is pretty good. I believe he has done morefor the Seniors than any of the other men.Ruby: Watch Cookie. He is the best of all. Did you ever seeanyone so quick? (Roots violently.) Oh good! I was scared to deaththat that little short Salem fellow would get to the third base. (Yells.)Ainslie: Rube, youd better quit yelling so much or some one willget you. I believe they can hear you above everyone else.Ruby: Oh fudge, you just keep still. I get excited and have togive it off some way.Lavona (moving closer to Ruby): Say, Rube, I believe you haveattracted attention. There is a man two seats over who keeps lookingover here all the time. I am not sure who it is. Look and see ifyou know.Ruby (looking in direction indicated): Why! that man is PaulStrain. Goodness! has he been watching me?Lavona: Indeed he has. I thought that it was he. Do you thinkhe will say anything to you?Ruby: Well, I just dont know. See if he is still looking.Lavona: Yes, and he has moved this way one seat.Ruby: Oh! I am scared to death.Ainslie: You girls had better watch the game. You are missinga good part of it while talking.Lavona: Well, maybe we have something to talk about.Ainslie: Maybe you have. I didnt say you hadnt.Shirley: I wouldnt fight here if I were you. What has happened?Look! everybody on the field is gathering about the catcher.Page Forty-eight
