Aurora Alternative High School, The Phoenix, 2000, Page 25

Description: There is a lot of hate in the world today-hate towards different classes, different races, religions or eventhose of alternative sexual orientation. Whatever thereason for the hate, it is not a good enough reason to killsomeone, beat someone up, or even tease someone.Hate crimes are becoming more and more commonand are happening closer to home.A Korean man, Won-Jon Yoon, was brutally murdered here in Bloomington (our quiet little town) last summer in front of his church. He was murdered because ofthe color of his skin, something over which he had nocontrol. Something no one controls yet people are judgedon every day.People are acknowledging these horrid crimes and moregroups are getting together to fight against this fatal ignorance. A couple of these groups are ARA and the SouthCentral Baha’i Youth Workshop.Thomas Herbin is a student at Aurora and a localARA member. ARA stands for Anti-Racist Action and thename fits the group well. They go to different towns and counter-demon-strate against the Ku Klux Klan. Thomas became involved when a friend invited him to come to a meeting.Stacy RobisonFatal IgnoranceBy: Carrie FarnsworthSarah Weber, April Ramsay, Matt McQueary, and Trista Taylor hang out on ourtrip to the bowling alley.
