Photographs, Continuous Treating Line, USS Gary Works

Description: Already heated in the hardening furnace and cooled in the pressure-water quench, a plate of USS T-1 alloy steel 198 inches wide moves into the tempering furnace, one of the last steps in the heat treating process. Later, the plate will be passed under a leveler to insure maximum flatness. The new line, latest addition to U.S. Steels 160/210-inch plate mill at Gary Steel works, heat treats the worlds widest carbon and alloy steel plates -- up to 200 inches wide and three inches thick. Product from the line is used in the fabrication of giant storage tanks for oil and water, for pressure vessels to hold natural and liquefied gases and for the construction of pipelines, bridges and buildings.
