Photographs, Continuous Treating Line, USS Gary Works

Description: A dramatic over-all view of the new continuous heat-treating line at U.S. Steels Gary Steel Works. The line consists of a heating or hardening furnace, a pressure water quench station, a tempering furnace, and a leveler. The heart of the new unit is a continuous, gas-fired hardening furnace with a roller hearth. Here, plates are heated to a hardening temperature of approximately 1700 degrees F. Shown here in full view in the foreground is the tempering furnace and transfer table. Not shown here, but which will be located to the right of the furnace, will be the leveler. The plates on the transfer bed are moving back and forth, cooling.
