Description: |
The beginning of an end of a tap. A giant steel ladle, supported on stands, takes the last of the molten steel as slag begins to run out from a newly tapped open hearth furnace at U.S. Steels Gary Steel Works. The temperature is in the neighborhood of 3,000 degrees F and varies according to the type of steel being made. The white hot steel flows from the furnace through a spout shown above the ladle. To the left of the spout is the chute for the addition of alloys. The spillage is excess slag which later will be scooped up by a special truck and taken to a special slag dumping area. |
