Photographs, Blast Furnace, USS Gary Works

Description: One of the 12 big blast furnaces at U.S. Steels Gary Steel Works. The blast furnaces take iron ore, coke and limestone in through the top, and heated air is then blown through the bottom to produce pig iron. This is an over-all view of a blast furnace at Gary Steel. This shows the furnace and the stoves (which supply the hot air) that operate in conjunction with it. In the immediate foreground is the entrance to the cast house. To the left, between the stairway and the wall, is a Pugh-type hot metal ladle shown receiving the molten pig iron. To the right slag is being poured into the tulip-shaped ladles, or slag pots, that take the molten slag to the slag dumping area. The big pipe angling down from the top of the furnace is the downcomer. It is connected to the dustcatcher, and as the name applies, removes dust from the blast furnace gas.
