Falling Flowers

Description: linocut on handmade paper with handsewn additions. Variable Edition of 5.
I wanted the viewer to linger on this image, to wonder how it relates to the tragedy on Al-Mutanabbi Street. I wanted to respond to the call for the rawness and the chaos that accompanies this act of violence. The falling rose (the national flower of Iraq) petals, bring to mind both the beauty inherent in flowers and also the grief of a funeral. Fire and smoke are implicit in the mark making and also in the choice of these specific tones of blacks and grays. The coarse black threads suggest sutures. Black rose petals imply the absence and also the presence of life (Retrieved from IUCAT November 8, 2019).
