Description: |
drypoint on Rives BKF. Edition of 10. The idea behind bombing booksellers and their patrons, books and their readers, is as old as humankind – that some kinds of knowledge are dangerous, and should be forbidden. The written word enables us to articulate and share information, or understanding, or ideas. Trying to stop the transmission of ideas is an ancient but fruitless pastime; for centuries people have been banning, burning or bombing books and the people who read them. The results have always been the same: ideas can’t be destroyed; books continue to find ways past the catastrophes and into people’s hands.Angels have been known to fall. As human beings we cling to the idea that our actions are observed and will ultimately be judged by celestial witnesses. We labor under the apprehension that our efforts, both violent and benevolent, will receive the blessings of the ultimate Judges. In contrast to the prospect of divine approval, the lives of our neighbors – the people we share a planet with – become insignificant. It’s time to allow the Gods and angels to fall from their heavenly observation posts so that the earthly results of our deeds can be seen as the true consequences; that devastations committed in the name of the Lord become simply devastations. |
