Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here

Description: intaglio, coppoer plate, soft ground etching, and dry point etching on Hahnemühle paper. Edition of 5.
The idea of creating a series of etchings entitling Absence and Presence for the project Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here seems to me appropriate to complete the idea of expressing a world where books were present and a world where books are absent because of them being voluntary destroyed by the car bombing on March 7th, 2007. My contribution to Presence and Absence is an illustration showing a book being destroyed, falling from a black-burned tree. The presence of books, here in black, growing on a green tree is symbolic of the origin of paper and spiritual life. The tree is also symbolic of strength and maturity in a blue sky. As a citizen of the town of Geneva, where human rights prevail and are constantly being discussed, the idea of destroying freedom of speech in the world is like reversing the natural order. Having already participated in the Artists Book project, The Al Mutanabbi print project also interested me, as, hopefully, an artistic response to violence might one day find its way to peace.
