Al Mutannabi Street has been referred to as a metaphor representing freedom of expression; with this in mind my print hopes to express this vital need to stand in the face violence with images, words and ideas. Books are more effective than bombs, so says Giles Fraser, speaking against the threat of violent extremism, in the Guardian newspaper (9/26/2014). Books: the stories and ideas within them offer us bearings and signposts for life. In this vein Al Mutannabi Street, the literary heart of Baghdad, offers a sanctuary for people to share their philosophies and their wisdom, gleaned from writers, poets and thinkers from across the centuries. Since the devastating bombing in 2007, the street is slowly healing: people can meet again in security and openly discuss current ideas; so crucial to feeling connected with the world and the Iraqi community.
