Description: |
Signed by Salomon. Salomon begins this letter expressing how affronted he feels, because Badollet seems to have expressed in his last letter (date referenced is 31st January) some concern that Salomon no longer cared for him; Salomon says it would have been much more reasonable for Badollet to think instead that he was hampered by other things, and that he can rarely do the things he actually wants to. The issue is simply that his official duties take up all of his time. Moving on, Salomon says he would be charmed to meet Badollet’s congressman, and promises to seek him out in order to give him some pamphlets on Geneva for Badollet. Gallatin has returned to his plantation with his wife and son Albert, effectively retiring from politics, and Salomon says his efforts have already been forgotten; this is because the politicians of Pennsylvania are ingrates, in Salomon’s opinion, and he goes on to rant about the money-hungry nature of politics and banking. On a better note Cazenove is doing well, Salomon thinks Badollet will enjoy Fayette County and may even meet General Lafayette, who is going to be spending a few days at Gallatin’s house on his return from New Orleans. Salomon, who has met him a few times previously, sings Lafayette’s praises and says he genuinely believes Badollet would benefit from meeting him. |
