Description: |
The First Presbyterian Church congregation organized in 1840. Its first building erected in 1844 was shared with the Congregationalist Church until both groups became too large for the small wooden building. The first building was relocated and this structure was built in 1872 on the same site at 306 S. Second Street. The original entrance faced north but in 1855 the entrance was moved to the west side of the structure as seen in the photgraph. It is of interest to note that the steeple bell served as a community firebell until the firehouse acquired one of its own. In April 1909, the church was dismantled to make way for a larger structure. This photgraph was taken between 1903 and 1909. See also epl_photograph_a0056_01 - epl_photograph_a0063_01. |
