Description: |
Religion is extremely important to the many cultures of Mexico. This importance can be traced back to the Ancient Aztecs and Mayans who built temples to their gods and made sacrifices, sometimes human, in their name. Today, the majority of Mexicans practice Roman Catholicism, brought to Mexico by the Spanish in the 1500s. Today, many Mexican holidays still have the traditional ideas that are integrated with Catholicism. Folk art is an important avenue for many artists to represent their religion, such as this wooden church made in the 1980s. |
