Description: |
Sasano-Bori is traditional carvings from the Sasano region in Yonezawa city in Japan. The term bori in Japanese literally means carving. Sasano-Bori has been handed down through the ages for the past 1,200 years, but it became well-known to most Japanese people in the 17th century. The different carvings are made from the aburanko, an indigenous shrub. Today, many farmers of Sasono, Japan, carve these wooden figures to sell along the side of the road as toys, like these particular birds. |
