Child playing soccer sculpture

Description: This wire mesh sculpture, made by Brazilian artist Monica Kabvegu in the 1980s, depicts a child playing soccer. Soccer is one of the most popular sports in Brazil, comparable to football and basketball in America. In fact, one of the most well-known soccer players in the world, Pelé, is a native of Brazil. In 1958 he became the youngest soccer player ever to win the World Cup at age 17 against Sweden. During his career, he won the World Cup three times and recorded 1281 goals in 1363 matches, defining him as the highest goal scorer in the history of professional soccer. He traveled the world playing with the Santos and the Brazilian team.
