Description: |
Scrimshaw is the art of carving or engraving useful or decorative objects from whalebone, whale ivory or baleen. Scrimshanders, people who carve scrimshaw, were usually American seamen hunting whales for oil. They used their time on long voyages to make carvings on whale teeth, pie crimpers, toys, and various household tools. A busque is a removable corset piece that helped women keep a very straight figure in some corsets from the 1600s to the 1800s. This one was not meant to be worn, but was given to a young woman by her sweetheart. |
