Description: |
Be a millionaire! Monopoly was invented on a table cloth in Atlantic City, NJ during the Great Depression. When the first games were sold by Parker Brothers in 1935 onwards, many Americans were enduring financial hardships. Foreclosures, bankruptcy and even evictions were harsh yet common events that many experienced. Under these conditions, a fantasy world where you could be a real estate magnet or a robber baron became very popular. These fantasy were reflected in many escapist movies of the 1930s, but Monopoly was also a positive and healthy way of escaping too. It has become the most widely sold board game in the world and is played in many countries. In the United States the properties are named after streets and railroads found in Atlantic City. In other countries, the names are changed to reflect the names of their streets, usually found in the capital of that country. |
