Description: |
Women are the basket makers in Vietnam, as well as most Southeast Asian countries. Baskets were part of every aspect of Vietnamese life, such as for ceremonial purposes, shelter, containers, and clothing. This backpack basket is a miniature version of a real basket used by various groups in the highlands of Vietnam. The basket would be worn on the back of the gatherer. The wide mouth made it easy to throw freshly picked crops in the basket. Other items could be carried in the basket such as food, wood, and various supplies. Small wooden “feet” on the bottom of the basket help prevent direct contact with the ground. This basket was probably made for a child or as a tourist souvenir. |
