Description: |
These baskets were made using a technique called coiling. Grass strands are gathered in long bundles and wrapped with raffia strips to hold them together. Strands of raffia were dyed different colors with natural pigments to create colorful patterns. The long grass bundles are then coiled and lashed together with more raffia to create baskets. Coil basket-making is prevalent in many parts of Africa. Materials are usually collected during the rainy season while they are moist and easy to use. These baskets, made and used in Nigeria in the 1960s, were probably used for storage. |
