This is a digitized recording of a dictabelt, which the Indianapolis Fire Department used to record dispatch calls during the 1960s and 1970s. Following are the calls on this dictabelt: 1) Fireman calls to ask if he is needed earlier than his normal shift, dispatcher unsure. 2) Caller asks if a Chief Warner is with IFD, actually with the Marion County relief agency. 3) Pumping department at IPW asks if fire is still going on at 1100 E. 378th St., Wake Up filling station, first alarm at 5:08 second at 5:19, off at 7:22. 4) Caller checking on condition of firemen. 5) Lou called to ask if anyone injured at Wake Up Station, dispatcher informs him that many were injured and Spanky Ends passed away. 6) Caller from Engine 27, says a reporter for Star wanted portraits of injured guys. Caller says that he had been to the station that exploded before and had reprimanded them for some spillover in the past. 8) Dispatcher informs police arson investigator that Star reporter would meet him at the fire prevention office. 9) Unattended fire reported in a vacant field next door to 4425 Caroline Street. 10) Kitch(?) Miller called to ask about the explosion, dispatcher informs Miller that it was at a filling station that IFD had previously reprimanded. 11) Chief calls to speak to District 2. 14) Caller has Butchs dad and is taking him up to see him. 15) Discussion of shift changes due to injuries. Several men called to volunteer, others came into their stations voluntarily when they heard about the explosion. 16) Two calls about a house fire at 963 English Avenue. 17) Chief asks about the list of injured men. Lou Drexler is speaking with a reporter. Chief authorizes dispatcher to release names of injured now that families have been informed. Dictabelt |
