New Albany and Salem Railroad Payroll Ledger

Description: This ledger illustrates the assortment of tradesmen needed to construct and maintain the New Albany and Salem Railroad, a cornerstone of Indiana transportation. In one entry, J. Dunigan received $4.10 for blacksmithing. Others split wood, purchased lumber, and built bridges.
Founded in 1847 this line linked the states northern region to Louisville and provided both local and national services. It carried Civil War troops and supplies, pulled President Abraham Lincolns funeral train from Lafayette to Michigan City, and helped transport the limestone used for the Empire State Building and the Pentagon. Exhibited as part of Treasures from the Collections - Celebrating 175 Years: 1830-2005. Second rotation.
