Description: |
George Washingtons administration issued this 1793 presidential decree as part of a strategy to quiet as many Native American tribes as possible while treaty negotiations and military preparations proceeded after General Arthur St. Clairs defeat in November 1791. This pronouncement spoke specifically to the Wea tribe, whose villages near modern Lafayette had just been destroyed by General Charles Scotts Kentucky militia in the summer of 1791. This document represents events leading up to General Anthony Waynes August 1794 victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and the subsequent Treaty of Greeneville, both turning points in the nations history. Thomas Jefferson was Secretary of State and signed because the decree involved another nation. Exhibited as part of Treasures from the Collections - Celebrating 175 Years: 1830-2005. Second rotation. |
