Indiana Womans Suffrage Association Record Book 1851-1886

Description: The Indiana Womans Suffrage Associations record book illustrates one of the earliest efforts for womens equality in Indiana. Founded in Richmond, Indiana, in 1851, and orginially known as the Womans Rights Association of Indiana, the organization made an unconventional and controversial demand for womens equality in all political and social spheres. The volume contains minutes of the annual and semi-annual conventions, treasurers reports, and the preamble and constitution of the Womans Rights Association of Indiana. Hannah Hiatt of Winchester, Indiana, was its first president. Amanda M. Way and Mary F. Thomas were also associated with the organizations early history. A document pasted to the volume refers to a meeting of the Richmond (Indiana) Suffrage Society in 1886. Also included is a report concerning the founding of Howard University.
