Sixth Biennial Convention, American War Mothers, 1931

Description: Group portrait of the American War Mothers at their sixth biennial convention, held from September 29th to October 2nd in 1931. They are posed on a beach in Long Beach, California and founder Alice Moore French (1863-1934) can be seen front row, center right, wearing a white dress with dark coat draped over her arm. Formed in Johnson County in May 1918, the organizations original purpose was to persuade women to more strictly conserve wheat, meat, fats and sugar as part of the war effort. They also issued their own service flag that mothers could hang in honor of their sons who were currently serving in the war. Other states quickly joined, and the organization was incorporated nationally in August 1918, the same month this photo was taken. The group is still active today.
