Description: |
Group portrait of the American War Mothers in front of the Indiana War Memorial. Founder Alice Moore French (1863-1934) can be seen seated front row, far right, wearing a light-colored coat with a fur collar. Formed in Johnson County in May 1918, the organizations original purpose was to persuade women to more strictly conserve wheat, meat, fats and sugar as part of the war effort. They also issued their own service flag that mothers could hang in honor of their sons who were currently serving in the war. Other states quickly joined, and the organization was incorporated nationally in August 1918, the same month this photo was taken. The group is still active today. |
