Panoramic view of the National Guard maneuver camp at Fort Benjamin Harrison in 1912. Fort Benjamin Harrison was established in June 1904 in Lawrence Township, Marion County. During the summer of 1910 Fort Harrison was the site of a major National Guard training operation. In August regular army and national guards from the six states of Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Illinois arrived at the camp for ten days of instruction and to engage in mimic warfare. Fifteen thousand National Guard troops participated with a thousand regular army troops acting as instructors. The joint maneuvers of national guards and regular army were subsequently held every two years, including one in 1912. |
