Description: |
In Indianapolis the first Community Chorus was held on Monument Circle on Saturday evening September 22, 1917. It was the first of a series of community music fests held there with participation by thousands of local musicians and singers. It is thought that this image shows one of those music fests. No information was found with the negative but a few clues can be seen by studying the image. A man stands in front of the large group of children and adults seated on the steps of the Memorial. He conducts the choir as four men behind him play trumpets and saxophones. A group of girls in white middy blouses are seated to his right around a Lead Kindly Light sign. There are also many Girl Scouts stationed around the Circle area and many onlookers. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. Interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
