Description: |
On June 4, 1922 a group of seventy-five women, students from the Normal College of the North American Gymnastic Union, left Indianapolis on a special train bound for Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The group camped for four weeks and took special instruction in camp life. Emit Rath, dean of the college, was in charge. The students had been holding their classes at the Athenaeum in Indianapolis since October, 1921. At the time the Normal College of the North American Gymnastic Union was the oldest American institution for the education of teachers of physical training. Previously located in New York, Chicago, and Milwaukee, the college made its home in Indianapolis in September, 1907. It offered college courses to prospective teachers of physical training and was accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. Interpositives are stored in PAN number order. |
