Garden Party at the Residence of Charles W. Fairbanks. Indianapolis, Indiana, May 15, 1916

Description: In May 1916 a national Conference of Charities and Corrections was held in Indianapolis. During the conference, Charles W. Fairbanks extended an invitation to the group to attend a Garden Party at his home on North Meridian Street. More than a thousand men and women delegates gathered on his lawn for the event hosted by Mr. Fairbanks and his two daughters. Modern ballroom and classic dances were given on the lawn, following the serving of temperance punch and light dainties. Women from various local committees also assisted the host by showing guests around the house and grounds. Visitors were first ushered into the home and then shown out to the lawn where the former Vice President greeted them, shaking hands with every guest. Fairbanks was campaigning that year as the vice-presidential running mate of Charles Evans Hughes, but they lost the election to Woodrow Wilson and his Hoosier running mate, Thomas R. Marshall. Fairbanks is seated about the middle of the image.
