Polk Sanitary Milk Company Employees, Columbia Park, 1922

Description: Group portrait of employees of the Polk Sanitary Milk Company at a picnic in Columbia Park in August 1922. The company was founded by James T. Polk, who previously ran a canning factory in Greenwood. In the 1890s, Polk opened a dairy farm and milk company at 613 E. 16th Street, which would grow to be one of the largest and most modern milk companies in the country. In 1910, he later opened a milking plant at 15th and Lewis Streets. The company closed its doors in the 1950s.
