William P. Mallonee in Civil War Uniform

Description: While living in Adams County, William P. Mallonee enlisted in the 89th Indiana Infantry in 1862. He served alongside more than 200,000 other Hoosiers in the Civil War. He had this picture made to send to his future wife, Rachel Archbold. The image comprises a small part of the family papers including his war journals. This is a tintype, also known as a ferrotype or melainotype. The image is supported on a thin sheet of lacquered iron. Tintypes date from the 1850s up into the 20th century.
