Brig. Gen. Ambrose Everett Burnside

Description: Born near Liberty, this Union army general invented a breech-loading rifle, became a railroad executive, and served as Rhode Island’s governor and U.S. Senator. Noted for his unusual facial hair, his “burnsides” are now called “sideburns.”
