Morgan

Description: Schools emerged in Morgan Township between 1885 and 1900, and by the turn of the century, there were nine one-room schoolhouses in the township as well as a two-room school in Palmyra. These schools provided education through 8th grade and typically had a total of between fifteen and twenty-five students. Secondary education began with the townships first high school established in Palmyra in 1910. In the early 1920s citizens saw the need for a larger, more centrally located facility, and in 1922 the township built a large two-story, brick school building along the main road between Palmyra and Central Barren. The new Morgan Township School accommodated both grade and high school students. With the establishment of the new school, the townships one-room schools began to close and students transferred to the new school. In 1949 the Palmyra High School closed and its students began to attend Morgan. In the mid-1950s, the surrounding townships of Blue River, Jackson, and Spencer consolidated their schools to form the North Central School Corporation. This school system erected new elementary and high school buildings near Ramsey in 1954. Morgan Township continued to operate its own school in the Central Barren area until 1970. At this time Morgan Township joined the North Central School Corporation to form the North Harrison School Corporation. As a result, Morgan High School was discontinued and its students began to attend the high school in Ramsey. Morgan Elementary, however, remained in operation and continues into the present day.
