Mauckport

Description: The town of Mauckport was founded along the banks of the Ohio River in 1827. An early school possibly existed near Lick Run Bridge, but records are unclear. The three schools known to have been built in Mauckport were all situated in the same general area - Lots 89, 90, and 91. The first known school at this location was built in 1848 and was replaced ca. 1862 with a new structure. (Some research indicates that the 1848 building was of log construction and the 1860s building was brick. Other sources say the 1848 building was brick.) One of the school’s earliest teachers was John Slaymaker. A final school building was constructed in Mauckport in 1899. This two-story schoolhouse was of frame construction and initially consisted of four rooms – two upstairs and two downstairs. While the building was being constructed, classes were held in the Lodge Hall over the Christian Church. In 1914 the school building was expanded with the addition of two rooms (one on each floor) on its south elevation. A similar addition was added to the building’s west elevation at a later date. The school housed lower grades on the first floor and high school on the second floor. Mauckport High School received state accreditation ca. 1912 and continued operation until 1950. At this time high school students in Mauckport were transferred to either Laconia or Corydon. Mauckport Grade School remained open and continued to hold classes in the two-story schoolhouse until 1957 when Heth Washington Elementary School was constructed near Central. No longer in use, the school building in Mauckport was then torn down.
