New Salisbury

Description: The first known schoolhouse in New Salisbury was a log structure built prior to 1867 in the south part of the town and was known as New Salisbury Number 3 School. In 1875 this building was replaced with a two-room log schoolhouse on the towns north side. Additions were made to this building over the years as it remained in use during the early twentieth century. New Salisbury High School was established in 1904 and had around forty students its first year. It was the third high school in the county to be accredited by the state, and the first to achieve this standard in the northern part of the county. In January 1931, New Salisbury High School students began their studies in a new two-story brick building on Corydon Junction Road. Additional classroom space and a gymnasium were added to the building in 1938. This building continued to serve as the New Salisbury High School into the mid-1950s. In 1951, Jackson Township merged with Blue River and Spencer Townships to form a new school corporation, and plans for a new consolidated high school were made. The final school term at New Salisbury High School was 1954-1955.
