Description: |
Corydon volunteer firemen Frank Dropsey, Leo Schuppert, Harry Crosby, and Earl Orwick are seen in action on the stairs of the Morris building in downtown Corydon, Indiana as they fought to put out flames in July of 1942. Flames were discovered between Harry L. Morris’s brick building on the square and the adjacent Davis Drug Store building on the evening of July 2, 1942. The firemen had to cut through the stairs in order to extinguish the flames. Fire and water caused severe damage to clothing in Berlin’s Department Store and to supplies in optician Dr. Elva Cunningham’s office as well as clocks and jewelry in Floyd Cunningham’s Jewelry Shop located in the Morris building. This fire was the first of three to occur within a week’s time for the town’s volunteer firefighting crew. |
