No. 12 - A French missionary

Description: The caption for this image, written in 1916 and provided by the Educator-Journal Company, follows:“12. The French Missionary. The French missionaries established the first formal religious worship in Indiana and the center of their activity was at Vincennes in Knox County, which was in the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Quebec, Canada. In 1778 Father Gibault performed a great service for the American government by persuading the Roman Catholics at Vincennes to declare in favor of the United States as against England, thereby helping George Rogers Clark to gain the support of many French and Indians and the capitulation of the fort at Vincennes.”
