Harve Franks and others with wheat binder at Arvil H. Miles farm

Description: This photograph was taken on the farm of Arvil H. Miles, secretary of the Harrison County National Farm Loan Association, located one mile south of Corydon. Miles (with necktie) stands in the field with Harve Franks (in front), who sowed and harvested the wheat, along with his sons Carlton and Sheldon, and Lafe Eckart. The men used a binder to harvest the wheat with a team of two mules and two horses to pull the “reaper.” Although there were several combines in use in Harrison County in the late 1930s, the majority of wheat crops in the area continued to use binders. In the corners of fields and other spots not easily accessible, farmers used an old fashioned cradle. Miles’ wheat field covered thirteen acres and required thirty pounds of twine in the harvest, and had an estimated yield of 300 bushels. The timing of this particular harvest was good. The men completed the work on Friday, and Saturday afternoon brought torrential rains, which damaged or destroyed numerous crops throughout the county.
