Griffin was the son of Patrick and Margaret McCarthy Griffin, and a brother of Patrick Griffin (father of Maurice Griffin). After serving throughout the Civil War in the 38th Indiana Volunteers, Colonel Daniel Griffin returned to Indiana in 1864 and lived with his wifes family in New Albany, Indiana.
